We superintend and manage all lights, buoys and beacons around the coast of Ireland. We provide most of the main lighthouses and other marine aids to navigation outside harbour limits.
We maintain over 300 marine aids to navigation around the coast of Ireland - lighthouses, buoys, beacons, racons, Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) and Differential GPS (DGPS) transmitters.
We superintend and manage all Local Aids to Navigation - those provided by local responsible bodies or individuals, located at the approaches to ports or harbours.
A new wreck can be very dangerous for shipping. We are responsible for marking or removing wrecks in Republic of Ireland waters (in the absence of a harbour authority with such a responsibility).
You need to obtain a Statutory Sanction from us to establish, alter or discontinue Local Aids to Navigation in ports, harbours and coastlines within the jurisdiction of a Local Lighthouse Authority.
